WELCOME TO YEAR 1
Our Year 1 class teachers are Miss Roble (1FR) and Miss Ruprai (1SR). Our teaching assistants are Miss Chatha and Miss Ejaz.
Our aim is to encourage independence and a love for learning. To ensure a smooth transition from the EYFS, we will teach with a blend of independent activities alongside focused, adult-led tasks.
After the first half term, we encourage the children to become more independent in English and Maths whilst still ensuring support is given when needed. We also enhoy a range of practical activities which develop thinking skills and problem solving.
Our topics are designed to stimulate and excite the children so they enjoy their learning and participate enthusiastically. We strive to provide a safe and secure environment in which every child is nurtured to achieve their own goals and targets.
Year 1 will need their PE kit on _ & _.
MATHS OVERVIEW
Every maths lesson begins with a mental arithmetic starter, recapping previously taught content and daily skills.
The lessons are then taught in unit blocks, which build on one another.
Every unit has the opportunity for children to become fluent in a skill before applying their knowledge to a variety of problems and reasoning questions.
ENGLISH OVERVIEW
At the heart of our English planning, teaching and learning, we use high quality and age appropriate texts. Children in Year 1 will also be taught Phonics.
You can see some of the books for Year 1 here!
The teaching of grammar is explicit and contextualised to the book children are reading. Explicit teaching of reading comprehension is part of the teaching sequence and daily English lessons.
Children in Year 1 are taught to write complete sentences with increased independence. We aim to use modelled and shared teaching approaches throughout the teaching sequences to support all children's learning.
Spelling and handwriting are taught discreetly and are planned for as part of the lesson.

SCIENCE OVERVIEW
Every science lesson begins with a vocabulary starter, recapping previously taught content and scientific skills.
The lessons are then taught in unit blocks, which build on one another.
Every unit has the opportunity for children to build on and develop their abilities as a scientist.
TOPIC OVERVIEW
Year 1 have six topics that are based on an area of History or Geography. At the end of every half term, children also have an Art or DT unit based on their topic. Children will have the opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge across these subjects, building on them every year.
Children begin and end every learning challenge with a big question. The topic then unfolds as the children work to uncover the answer to the big question and ultimately create a final response to it such as a piece of writing, a project or art work.
Our topics in Year 1 are:
Who Flew the First Plane?
What's Special About Where We Live?
What Is So Great About Britain?
How Do People Stand Up For What's Right?
Is It Always Sunny In Highgate?
What Made Neil Armstrong So Great?
