At Chandos, we are committed to successfully building a reading culture with a genuine love of reading which is firmly embedded and embraced throughout our whole school. We strive to make our children and staff become life-long readers together, who actively read for pleasure and information. The adults in our school community are encouraged to share their own reading preferences and invite the children to develop and share their favourite books too. Staff are therefore able to support children to make informed choices about the books that they choose to read both at home and at school.
At Chandos, we know by celebrating and encouraging reading together, we can inspire children to become self-motivated, engaged readers who enjoy reading for pleasure both in school and at home. In the Chandos Community, we fully recognise the value of parents / carers as essential components to supporting and developing reading skills and a love of reading.
At Chandos, DEAR time is sacrosanct. This means that that DEAR time is recognised as too important or valuable to not happen every day.
It happens every day at the same time in every classroom.
During DEAR time, an adult reads a high quality, age related text to the class that has been picked by the children.
The adult will model excellent fluency and expression when reading to the children.
From Reception to Year 2, the children read the same book repeatedly throughout the week.
We also have a number of reading ambassadors who actively encourage others to read and inspire a love for reading. At Chandos, we firmly believe that reading can change lives.
