At Chandos, the majority of our pupil speak English as an Additional Language with many children joining us with little or no English at all. We are passionate about supporting these children to learn the language as quickly as possible in a safe and nurturing environment so that they can progress and develop their confidence.
When children join us, we want to make sure the children are comfortable, happy and settled in their classrooms as a first priority. Where we can, we pair them with a peer who speaks the same language and can support them. Once they are settled, their language proficiency is assessed by the class teacher. Any child who is assessed as being level A (new to English) or Level B (early aquisition) is then baselined for intervention.
During interventions, children work in small groups with a teacher in our language rich EAL classroom. Through pre teaching, the children are taught the key words needed for their History and Geography work, allowing them to access the curriculum and engage in collaborative work in the classroom as well as understand what they are learning. Our EAL teachers use lots of different ways to engage the children in the intervention and help them understand the new vocabulary such as drama, singing, hands on practical activities as well as incorporating their hobbies and interests as much as possible to apply their learning of English in all areas.
We also use Learning Village to suppot these children with their learning in school and at home.
