At Chandos, Personal, Social, Health and Economic education is taught as part of a wider, rich and balanced curriculum, with dedicated lesson time given as well as having the key themes and messages woven throughout everything that happes in school. They are embedded into our school ethos and values of:
Through these lessons and values, our pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. We aim to help children to stay healthy and safe, whilst also preparing them to make the most of life and work.
Every child, regardless of gender, race or ability will have equal access to the PSHE Curriculum. We aim to provide for all children so that they can achieve their best according to their individual needs, whether they need addition support or more challenge.
At Chandos we:
Create successful, effective learners who understand and value scholarship and education
Create competent, critical thinkers who can challenge and develop ideas
Create effective communicators of our share beliefs, values and learning
Create tolerant and respectful global citizens who have an understanding and knowledge of our local, national and global communities
At Chandos, we follow the Mental Wellbeing SCARF programme of study, which is a whole school approach covering the comprehensive and broad knowledge and skills that the children are required to learn from the National Curriculum.
At Chandos, we believe that PSHE plays a vital role in primary education and should be taught every week. This can be by teaching a theme explicitly or by weaving it into learning that the children are already doing and making it a cross curricular learning experience. We jump at the opportunity to make these links, especially when presented by children asking questions about the world around them or whenever a situation naturally arises in the classroom to teach PSHE.
As well as being explicitly taught, PSHE is an important part of our school assemblies, where children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.
The Early Years Curriculum ensures that children gain a solid understanding of managing themselves and building relationships. Throughout their time in Early Years, children are given the opportunity to share, take turns and be involved in discussions as part of circle time.
At Chandos, we aim to equip our children for their futures in a world that is constantly changing and adapting. Through their PSHE lessons, children will develop their understanding of the world that we live in and confidently ask questions about things they do not understand. Children will be given the opportunity for discussion and debate where they will be encouraged to take on different responsibilities and to kindly challenge ideas they do not agree with, giving reasons for this.
Ultimately, we want to have given our children the skills that they need to make a difference in the world.
By talking to children, it will be evident that this is the case.
