At Chandos, we aim for all children to be good digital citizens, leaving our school with the ability to use technology effectively and efficiently with ease for both acadmic use and enjoyment. In order to do this, we have adopted a hands on, practical approach when teaching Computing where we promote and encourage children to seek answers for themselves by incorportating technology into every day life, exploring new apps and programmes through play and by learning from their peers.

Every child, regardless of gender, race or ability will have equal access to the Computing Curriculum. We aim to provide for all children so that they can achieve their best according to their individual needs, whether they need additional support or more challenge.

Curriculum Intent

At Chandos, we:

create successful, effective learners who understand and value scholarship and education
create competent, critical thinkers who can challenge and develop ideas

create tolerant and respectful global citizens who have an understanding and knowledge of our local, national and global communities

Curriculum Implementation

At Chandos, our Computing curriculum is taught as a stand alone subject but with some knowledge intertwined within the rest of the wider and core curriculum when appropiate. We aim to incorporate the use of technology throughout all aspects of learning to allow children to have opportunities to demonstrate their computing knowledge at all times.

With the use of technology, we aim to make all areas of the curriculum more exciting and engaging for the children. With the use of numerous technological devices - such as chromebooks, interactive screens and ipads - children are exposed to new experiences and knowledge that will deepen their overall understanding of the whole curriculum and the topics that we teach.

Children are given opportunities to develop their Google and Computing skills by: publishing written work on chromebooks using Google Docs, Slides and Sites; analysing mathematical data and transforming into graphs in Google Sheets; learn new languages online through the use of Google Classroom; access coding programmes such as Scratch and Hour of Code; enhance their typing skills by learning to touch-type; and increase their knowledge of the world as a whole.

In every year group, children are taught how to keep themselves safe online through a series of e-safety lessons that cover privacy, repsonsibilities and choices when online.

As technology is ever changing, we aim to continually enhance the use of ICT throughout the school and offer the appropriate training to all staff to consolidate their capabilities to teach effectively. We encourage all of our teachers to complete the Google Level 1 award in their first year with us.

Computing Skills To Be Developed

Along with the general,computing knowledge all children at Chandos will be taught, there are also four main computing skills that children will build upon year on year.

They are as follows:

Children will understand why we have and use technology as well as know how to be safe when online and what to do if they feel unsafe.

Online Safety Policy

Children will be able to use a variety of software to analyse and evaluate data including with internet services.

Children will develop an understanding of algorithms and how to write instructions to program software.

Children will use technology for effective purposes as well as understanding how we can use it to communicate and work together.

Curriculum Impact

At Chandos, we aim to instill a love of learning through our broad and exciting Computing curriculum. This is achieved by encouraging children to ask questions for themselves and to communicate what they have learnt with a range of digital media at every opportunity. Children will gain an understanding of how the digital world around them is ever changing and how it has progressed over time.

During all learning challenges, children will have the opportunity to utilise their computing skills to present pieces of work in a variety of ways. This is their opportunity to demonstrate and express what skills they have learnt during their current year whilst also demonstrating how they have built on previous years' skills. By talking to children and looking at a range of pieces of work, it will be evident that this is the case.
