Spiritual Moral Social & Cultural
The spiritual, moral, social and cultural curriculum that we deliver at Chandos follows guidance published by Birmingham Local Authority.

At Chandos Primary School, children are taught mathematics through a range of approaches, including problem solving and practical activities where possible. Our learning materials are based on the White Rose Maths published resources. In addition to daily maths lessons, children receive ten minute mental maths sessions to develop their fluency and mental recall skills. More detail can be found in the Maths Policy. English is taught daily and provides a balanced development of reading, writing and speaking & listening. Our English Policy provides detail of the curriculum and strategies taught.
Writing is developed through the use of "The 5 Rs"
- Read It (read and understand a text),
- Rip It (Idenitify and understand the main features and grammar within a text type),
- Rehearse It (develop a rich understanding of the text type through speaking, listening, role play, drama, hot seating...),
- wRite It (drafting a piece of writing in the style of the chosen text), and finally
- Revise It (editting and improving a written piece of writing to produce a final completed piece of work.
This process can followed through over one or two weeks.
Reading is developed through a five step process called Reciprocal Reading
Predict - When predicting the reader is anticipating what will come next in the text, based on appropriate prior knowledge, on the structure and content of the text and what they have read previously.
Read - After predicting, the children will start to read the text. This includes developing accuracy, fluency, decoding unknown words. This will include reading out load to an audience and silently to themselves.
Clarify - This takes the form of a discussion with the teacher and between children. When clarifying, pupils have opportunities to deal with difficulties, including: unfamiliar vocabulary - words or phrases; new or difficult concepts; when the meaning has been lost
Question - At this stage, teachers ask questions to explore the meaning of the text and to further deepen the children’s understanding of what they have just read.
Summarise - when summarising the child identifies the main or most important information in the section read. It should sum up the passage read in one or two sentences.

At the early stages of reading children are taught phonics through the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc. scheme. Children learn to link specific sounds to letters and groups of letters. This supports their development of reading and writing skills. Please click on the video link below to see how sounds are pronounced and taught in school. This can easily be followed up and reinforced by parents/carers at home.
